I think that there's enough reason to stick with Python 2.2 that we
ought to do so.

It also turns out that this particular use of Python 2.3 was completely
stupid: the variable in question was totally unused!

So, I checked in this patch, which I think should restore usability with
Python 2.2.  Pragnesh, thanks for bringing this issue to my attention!
