I've played with this locally and this works. The only problem
is that you can't use <a> with empty href for menu items:
brower will try to access "" on click then. Guess that plays
with CSS will be needed to achive the same look as for links.

I completely agree.

OK. As far as they pop up on click (which is doable), I've no objections.
