We feel that it's OK to use JavaScript in the GUI; JavaScript (or, more
properly ECMA) is pretty universal these days and will only get more so.

Of course, it would be nice to have a non-JavaScript version too,
especially for browsers like Lynx where JavaScript doesn't really make
sense.

The motivation for the change was really aesthetics; the drop-down boxes
as menus weren't very attractive.  The new menus look more like normal
menus.
