Final patch for newfield_revision

Here is the patch describing my check-ins to finish up my work on 
newfield_revision. This was tested under CodeWarrior Pro 7 and approved 
by Stephen and Jim. There are a few problems remaining, but we're close 
enough to merge the branch back. Stephen is done for now as well.
