__ctype_ptr__ in .data (RAM)?

(Sourcery G++ Lite 4.4-52) version 4.4.1 (m68k-elf)

Is there a special reason to have __ctype_ptr__ in .data?

BTW, regarding this line in ctype.h: 
  extern	__IMPORT _CONST char	*__ctype_ptr__;
Is "__IMPORT" defined anywhere else than in config.h?
